Wildlife You Can See
- The Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Rhinos are rare, so lions, elephants, and buffalo are the ones you’re most likely to see.
- Big cats: the Mara is known for its lion prides, and for cheetahs and leopards.
- Other animals: giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, hyena, topi, eland, and gazelles.
- Birds: hundreds of species, from ostriches and secretary birds to colourful bee-eaters.
The Great Wildebeest Migration
Every year, over a million wildebeest, along with zebra and gazelles, travel between Tanzania’s Serengeti and the Maasai Mara in search of fresh grass. The most dramatic moments are the river crossings on the Mara River, where the herds face strong currents and waiting crocodiles.
- When: usually between July and October
- What to expect: timing changes each year with the rains, so crossings can’t be promised for a particular day.
- Tip: book early for this season, since lodges fill up quickly.
